Just A Girl And Her Bird (and her chef uncle’s romance with the local farmer, I guess…) | A review of Savor It by Tarah DeWitt

Summer won’t last forever.

Sage Byrd has lived in the coastal town of Spunes, Oregon (not to be confused with Forks, Washington) her entire life. She’s learned to love her small world, with the misfit animals on her hobby farm, and her friendships with the town’s inhabitants. But when her 5-year relationship ends and her ex, town-golden-boy Ian, suddenly gets engaged, Sage needs a win―something that will convince everyone to stop pitying her all the time, and to put Ian in his place. The Festival of Spunes, the town’s annual summer competition, would be the perfect opportunity. She just needs a partner.

Fisher Lange was a hotshot chef in New York City until the loss of his sister left him numb, grieving, and responsible for his teenage niece Indy. When Fisher loses his Michelin star along with his love of cooking, his boss sends him and Indy to Spunes on a much-needed summer sabbatical to consult on a restaurant opening. But when clashes with the townspeople threaten his last chance to redeem himself and a kiss with his new neighbor Sage leads to dating rumors, a strategic alliance might just be the best way to turn things around.

A deal is struck. Sage will improve Fisher’s image in the eyes of the town and remove the roadblocks he is facing with the restaurant, and Fisher will be Sage’s partner for the competition. But as their pact quickly turns into steamy rendezvous, emotional wounds begin to heal, and the pair tries to savor every moment, they start to realize that summer is racing by much faster than they would like…

I received an ARC of this book in exchange for this review. All thoughts on Savor It are my own.

Rating: 4 out of 5.

Immediately upon opening this book, I fell in love with how cozy it is!

It’s very easy to tell that Savor It takes place in a small town. The cast of characters we meet soon after beginning the book are close, part of a tight-knit community you can feel through the pages. Combined with our teacher/farmer main character, this book felt like the perfect cozy story!

The main point to Savor It, or the lesson the characters are portraying to readers, is that life is too short and beyond our control to not enjoy the small things in life. In every aspect of the story, as Fisher and Indy fall in love with this community, they’re learning how to find their place in the world and how to slow down to enjoy the little things around them. Paired with the “will they or won’t they” romance between Fisher and Sage, it was easy to fall in love with the small details of this story and enjoy the ride!

My absolute favorite part of this book, however, was the relationship between Indy and Sage’s goose. It’s weird to describe in a book review where I’m trying not to give out spoilers for the book, but seeing Indy learn to care for that crazy bird throughout the course of this book was a great pairing to Fisher finding the things (and people…) he loved in the town.

That being said, there were some times in this book where I was a bit bored. While I enjoyed the writing style and highlighted a lot of fun lines on my kindle, there were moments where I had to put this book down and do something else, my mind drifting away from the story to find some other sort of amusement.

But I did enjoy this story when all was said and done, and I actually cried twice during my reading of it (I’m an easy crier), which helps show that I really did care for these characters and their story! I can’t help but look fondly back at Savor It, and I’m sure anyone who picks this book up will enjoy it as well!
